Our Fillings Create Natural-Looking Tooth Repairs

Dental Fillings in Clearwater, FL

If you have a cavity, your dentist needs to remove the decay and repair the tooth with a filling. This repair stops the decay from spreading and restores your tooth’s function so you can chew on it comfortably again.

At Causeway Dentistry in Clearwater, FL, we offer dental fillings that look similar to tooth enamel. When we match the filling to the white shade of your tooth, we can create a virtually invisible repair.

How Do Cavities Form?

If you know how cavities develop, you can be more proactive in preventing them!

Plaque is a sticky, bacteria-filled film that builds up on your teeth throughout the day. Bacteria in plaque produce acid that weakens tooth enamel and eventually creates a hole in your tooth that we call a cavity.

What's the Process for Getting a Tooth Filled?

When Dr. Santos places a dental filling in Clearwater, the first step is to numb your tooth, so you don’t feel any pain. He then carefully removes the decay, thoroughly dries the area he’s treating, and applies a liquid to the prepared tooth to roughen its surface. Dr. Santos matches the dental filling to the white shade of your tooth then places it in the cleaned-out cavity.

He then adds the filling material, building it up layer by layer and molding it carefully to match the tooth’s shape. He uses a curing light to harden the material, and the result is a beautiful, seamless tooth repair.

When you detect tooth decay early on, you’ll have the best chance of treating it with a simple dental filling. This is why it’s so important to routinely visit your dentist in Clearwater for checkups since they can detect problems early on.

Common Signs of Tooth Decay

Tooth decay can be tricky to detect on your own, but here are three telltale signs you may need a dental filling:

  • Tooth discoloration—If you notice a dark spot on your tooth or the entire tooth darkening, it may indicate decay.
  • Pain or discomfort when chewing—If you have tenderness when biting, chewing, or eating, you suffer from tooth decay.
  • Temperature sensitivity—Tooth decay may cause a painful zing when enjoying hot or cold food or beverages.

What Should I Do?

If you notice signs of tooth decay, immediately contact your dentist for an exam. We may be able to treat tooth decay detected early with dental fillings in Clearwater.

If decay is not detected, it will progress further into the tooth and cause an infection. Tooth infections require root canal treatment to eliminate the infected tissues and preserve the tooth.

What Can I Do to Prevent Cavities?

While you can’t prevent every cavity, you can take steps to minimize your risk.

Six-Month Dental Checkups and Cleanings

During your six-month exams and cleanings, Dr. Santos checks for cavities and gum disease to catch them when they are small and easier to treat.

Teeth cleanings with our hygienist remove every trace of plaque and tartar (hardened plaque) and leave you with a bright, fresh, squeaky-clean smile.

Brush Twice a Day, Floss Once

Plaque buildup starts the cavity-causing process, so your goal is to keep your teeth as clean as possible. This means brushing at least twice a day: once when you wake up and again before you go to sleep.

Flossing once a day removes plaque buildup and food particles between teeth where your brush can’t reach. If you’re unsure how to floss correctly, ask our dental hygienist, who will be happy to show you!

Avoid Sugary and Starchy foods

Bacteria love to feed on sugar and starch (carbohydrates) in a process that produces acid that attacks tooth enamel. You already know you should avoid candies and sweets, but soft drinks and energy drinks are also loaded with sugar.

Stop Smoking

The apparent effects of smoking are stained or discolored teeth and bad breath. However, smoking also affects the gum tissue and makes you more prone to infections. This is a problem because using tobacco makes it harder for your body to fight infection when it occurs. Smoking also causes dry mouth that contributes to gum disease.
